August 2010 News

We had 7 people, a great pot luck and lively conversation at our August 26 meeting.

FESTIVAL GATHERING REVIEW
Four of us went to the Festival Gather, and we shared what we had learned in the workshops and keynotes, and all the fun we had in between. And CinDay made a very decent showing at the annual NBS Olympic Games.

Here's a few highlights of our conversation about the Festival Gathering:
- Judy and Diana found John Epp's advice to use exaggerated movement and visualization to LEARN the story, then minimize gestures when telling to be very effective.
- In his workshop, Bert Ambrose suggested each pastor (or storyteller) should learn a 'tool box' of the most commonly used pastoral stories which will cover a lot of counseling/comforting situations. (Bert is on our Guild mailing list.)
- Rabbi Rachmiel Tobesman (an orthodox Jewish 'maggid' - a traveling spiritual storyteller) gave us an idea of how storytelling fits into the Jewish Biblical tradition, and told stories. (see his website: http://projectshalom2.org and his blog http://projectshalom2.org/StoryTour )
- Jackson Day has developed a series of story based Bible studies that use a set of generic questions to get the discussion started for any story. Here's a sample: http://biblestorytelling.org/adults/1%20Good%20Beginning.pdf

GUILD GROUP TELLING
Earlier in the year, we selected stories of Acts to be our 'group telling' project for the year and used them for our July tellings at Twin Towers Retirement community, Cincinnati. But we're now going in another direction.
I won't try to recap the entire conversation, but the conclusion is that we have a mutually beneficial plan: a telling of Wilderness Stories at Tipp City UMC on October 24. We get to tell stories and they get to hold a fund raiser.

The fundraiser is for a Tipp City group that is going on a mission trip to Tanzania (east coast of Africa) next summer. It will be on October 24, Sunday, at 3:00pm.
We're switching from "Stories of Acts" to "Wilderness Stories" to tie into the Tanzania location.

Watch your email for a Call for Tellers soon.

TIPS ON AN EXTENDED PERFORMANCE

Janet and her husband will be the entertainment for a Promise Keepers Couples event, so she picked our collective brains for stories, format, staging and organization.
